Alpha Lambda Zeta Fraternity, Inc. Member Honored for Commitment to Social Justice
March 30, 2009 - The members of Alpha Lambda Zeta Fraternity, Inc. pride themselves in being politically involved and community focused with specific focus within the LGBT and minority communities. While remaining true to the principles of the fraternity, Latasha L. Hampton, known within the fraternity as Frat Elaborate, was recently recognized as the Social Justice Person of the Year at this year's Phoenix Black Pride Celebration by Soul Purpose, the host of the pride celebration.
Frat Elaborate was born into the most humble of conditions to say the least. It was on the streets of Chicago that she learned the hard way that involvement in positive activities, education and hard work would be the path to her success and life fulfillment. After leaving a life of gang banging as youth, she began to volunteer in the community, graduated from high school, honorably served her country, excelled in college, and has become one of the most respected Law Enforcement agents in Tempe, AZ through her continued work with youth, human rights initiatives, and public safety.
Frat Elaborate has met the challenge and remained true to Alpha Lambda Zeta Fraternity, Inc.’s principles of Fraternal Sisterhood, Community Volunteerism, Political Activism, Erudition, and Professionalism through her recent work within the organization’s Get out to Vote (GOTV) initiatives by participating in six registration drives hosted by the fraternity, canvassing with the Arizona Democratic Party, phone banking, active participation in Veterans for Obama Campaigns, Marriage Equality Initiatives, and leadership within the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
Soul Purpose is a grassroots volunteer organization dedicated to serving Phoenix Metropolitan LGBT Community and was developed approximately three years ago out of the growing need for resources and visibility within LGBT communities of color. Their goal is provide visibility, self empowerment, and leadership for black LGBT through a combination of education, social activities, and community collaborations. Frat Elaborate was awarded the Soul Justice Person of the Year Award by Soul Purpose, which recognizes individuals who are material in supporting community advancement through leadership by helping people in the community better themselves.
Alpha Lambda Zeta Fraternity, Inc. was proud to serve as a sponsor for this year’s Phoenix Black Pride celebration where they also successfully hosted a workshop entitled "Identifying and Combating Negative Stereotypes within the LGBT Community." Frat Elaborate was material in the development and presentation of this workshop, and the celebration in its entirety, where she volunteered her time and talents to help make the event a success. She currently serves as leadership within Soul Purpose as a member of the planning committee.
