From Stigma to Strength: Real Conversations for Minority Mental Health Awareness Month
This month, we are launching a heartfelt video series:🎥 “Let’s Talk About Mental Health” — real members, real stories, real support. Each video focuses on a different challenge that impacts mental health for LGBTQ+ individuals of color. Frat Enthroned opens up about something many of us are facing or will face: supporting aging parents.
🖤 The Mental Load of Caregiving
Caring for an aging parent isn’t just a logistical challenge, but it’s an emotional and mental journey. Frat Enthroned shares how they navigate that path with intention, vulnerability, and strength:
“Mentally, how I deal with an aging parent is that I do a lot of research... I make myself available 24/7... I do get frustrated—but I know I’m doing my best.”
When we’re raised to “push through” or ignore emotions, it can be hard to talk about the emotional toll of caregiving. But in this reflection, Frat Enthroned reminds us that support systems matter. Whether it's your spouse, your chosen family, or your fraternity siblings—having people to lean on can mean the difference between burnout and balance.
💬 Coping Tip from Frat Enthroned
“You can get through it... It will challenge you mentally, but you don’t have to do it alone.”
That reminder hits home. In communities of color, we’re often taught to be strong for everyone else. But strength also means asking for help, acknowledging your limits, and centering mental wellness as part of your caregiving plan.
💚More Self-Care Tips for Caregivers
Caring for an aging parent is an act of deep love—but it can also be emotionally and physically exhausting. Here are five practical self-care tips to help you stay balanced and supported:
Schedule "You" Time Regularly
Even just 30 minutes a day can make a difference. Read, walk, rest—anything that helps you recharge.
Set Boundaries Without Guilt
Protect your time and energy. Saying "no" doesn't mean you don't care—it means you care about both of you.
Connect with Support
You’re not alone. Caregiver support groups (online or local) offer a safe space to share, vent, and learn.
Stay On Top of Your Health
Don’t ignore your needs. Prioritize sleep, nutrition, and movement—your wellness impacts your caregiving.
Use Respite Care or Ask for Help
Rest is not a luxury; it’s necessary. Ask family, friends, or local services for help. You deserve relief.
